Department of Psychopathology, Tokyo Institute of Psychiatry, 2-1-8 Kamikitazawa, Setagaya-ku, Tokyo 156, Japan Eighteen factors were examined for their effect on the outcome in 103 English speaking temporary residents who received treatment in Japan for a psychiatric disorder. Two dimensions extracted by multivariate analysis distinguished "premature leave" and "drop out" category respectively. The first "premature leave" dimension was composed of mode of therapy, primary diagnosis, accumulated stay and experience of past stay in Japan. The second "drop out" dimension was composed of mode of therapy and referral source. The treatment outcome was influenced by personal psychiatric data, the social adaptation process and the treatment process.
